It mapped all compli\u00adca\u00adted contract manage\u00adment proces\u00adses and was charac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adsed by great comple\u00adxity. The quantity frame\u00adwork included 1,400 COBOL programs with appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adately 3.2 million lines of code. The system entailed high licence fees, rising mainten\u00adance costs and a lack of modern develo\u00adp\u00adment environ\u00adments and frame\u00adworks. The aim of the project was to replace the COBOL programming language with Java and to obtain a future-proof system \u2013 while comply\u00ading with all quality speci\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons in an agile project.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"de\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">Since manual refac\u00adto\u00adring is unfea\u00adsi\u00adble in such a complex system in the foreseeable future, the <a href=\"https:\/\/entw.proetcon.de\/index.php\/en\/software-migration-2\/\">software migration<\/a> from pro et con was imple\u00admen\u00adted with the use of tools. Language migration is the most challen\u00adging part of a migration project. It cannot succeed without sophisti\u00adca\u00adted conver\u00adsion tools based on compi\u00adler construc\u00adtion techni\u00adques. The scien\u00adti\u00adfic approach guaran\u00adtees the seman\u00adtic equiva\u00adlence between origi\u00adnal and conver\u00adted programs. Exper\u00adtise in compi\u00adler construc\u00adtion was there\u00adfore an important prere\u00adqui\u00adsite for the success of the project. Here, pro et con had many years of experi\u00adence and expertise.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"de\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">In order to achieve an agile project approach, the entire COBOL code was divided into packa\u00adges. A package contai\u00adned about 120 to 150 programs and was imple\u00admen\u00adted within a four-week sprint. Fourteen migration packa\u00adges were created for the entire code. These were then conver\u00adted within just under 12 months. The actual migration phase was follo\u00adwed by an inten\u00adsive test phase of six months using automa\u00adtic tests with Cucum\u00adber and Gherkin.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"de\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\">As planned, the project duration was 1.5 years. The genera\u00adted Java code is maintainable and perfor\u00admant. This means that S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing can maintain and further develop effici\u00adently with modern develo\u00adp\u00adment environ\u00adments and frame\u00adworks while saving on licence fees.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"de\" data-phrase-index=\"0\" data-number-of-phrases=\"1\"><span class=\"Q4iAWc\"><strong>Sebas\u00adtian Seek, Head of Software Develo\u00adp\u00adment at S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing GmbH:<\/strong> \u201cOf course, we also feel the pressure in the area of \u200b\u200bdigita\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion in our indus\u00adtry. In order to be able to conti\u00adnue to offer our innova\u00adtive soluti\u00adons on the market in the future, it was very important for us to moder\u00adnise our central leasing system. At the begin\u00adning we were skepti\u00adcal about the tool-supported COBOL-Java migration, since we had heard about projects that had failed. However, we found the right partner in the pro et con team. As early as the proof of concept, it was possi\u00adble to prove that the complex arith\u00adme\u00adtic opera\u00adti\u00adons of finan\u00adcial mathe\u00adma\u00adtics were carried out correctly and that the runtime for mass proces\u00adsing programs also met our expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons.
