S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing GmbH<\/a> is one of the largest leasing compa\u00adnies in Germany and opera\u00adtes within the LBBW Group. The company is an experi\u00aden\u00adced and compe\u00adtent partner for all aspects of invest\u00adment finan\u00adcing with a leasing portfo\u00adlio of \u20ac3.6 billion. Four hundred employees work at 21 locati\u00adons throug\u00adhout Germany. This makes S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing GmbH one of the top three leasing compa\u00adnies in Germany.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\t\t\t

On the way to a future-proof manage\u00adment system for leasing contracts<\/h2>\n

So far, S\u00fcdLeasing\u2019s leasing contracts have been proces\u00adsed using a complex COBOL system. It consis\u00adted of 4,027 programs and copybooks with appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adately 3.2 million lines of code. In 2019, S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing decided to start the \u201cLEASCO Techni\u00adcal Reengi\u00adnee\u00adring Inven\u00adtory System\u201d project. The aim was to replace the COBOL programming language and to obtain a sustainable system for managing leasing contracts \u2013 while comply\u00ading with all quality speci\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons in an agile project. COBOL should be repla\u00adced by Java through a tool-based conversion.<\/p>\n

Successful language conver\u00adsion using sophisti\u00adca\u00adted tools<\/h2>\n

Language conver\u00adsion is the most challen\u00adging part of a software migration. It cannot succeed without sophisti\u00adca\u00adted conver\u00adsion tools based on compi\u00adler construc\u00adtion techni\u00adques. The scien\u00adti\u00adfic approach guaran\u00adtees the seman\u00adtic equiva\u00adlence between origi\u00adnal and conver\u00adted programs. Exper\u00adtise in compi\u00adler construc\u00adtion is there\u00adfore an important prere\u00adqui\u00adsite for project success. With our COBOL to Java Conver\u00adter (CoJaC<\/a>) we have  a mature tool chain for language conver\u00adsion that has proven itself in the present project.<\/p>\n

The user inter\u00adface of the COBOL system was develo\u00adped in-house by S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing on a Windows basis with around 2,100 ASCII masks. COBOL server and Windows client exchan\u00adged their infor\u00adma\u00adtion via COBOL messa\u00adges. Even before the start of the migration project, S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing redeve\u00adlo\u00adped the user inter\u00adface as a web appli\u00adca\u00adtion using the Angular frame\u00adwork. The exchange of infor\u00adma\u00adtion with the unchan\u00adged COBOL programs contin\u00adued to take place via COBOL messa\u00adges. The web appli\u00adca\u00adtion should conti\u00adnue to be used after the moder\u00adni\u00adsa\u00adtion. The task in the project was to develop an inter\u00adface between the existing web appli\u00adca\u00adtion and the newly conver\u00adted Java programs. During the migration, Java web services are created from COBOL servers. The exchange of infor\u00adma\u00adtion with the web inter\u00adface takes place via Java classes, which were created by conver\u00adting the COBOL messa\u00adges. Thus, the web inter\u00adface could be used in paral\u00adlel in the COBOL system and in the Java system during the project period.<\/p>\n

Reduced test effort through automa\u00adted tests<\/h2>\n

A chall\u00adenge in every migration project is to prove that the origi\u00adnal and conver\u00adted programs work identi\u00adcally. The compa\u00adti\u00adbi\u00adlity of the user inter\u00adface with the origi\u00adnal COBOL system and the genera\u00adted Java system was used for these tests. A complex collec\u00adtion of Gherkin test scena\u00adrios was created using the Cucum\u00adber frame\u00adwork and control\u00adled by Jenkins. Both the COBOL system and the migra\u00adted Java system were execu\u00adted browser-based via Selenium. The results were compared. The automa\u00adtic compa\u00adri\u00adson of the COBOL and Java systems signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly reduced the testing effort.<\/p>\n

The project was reali\u00adsed jointly by S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing and us using our techno\u00adlo\u00adgies and tools. As planned, the project duration was 1.5 years. The new system is based on a modern Spring archi\u00adtec\u00adture. The genera\u00adted Java code is maintainable and perfor\u00admant. Effici\u00adent mainten\u00adance and further develo\u00adp\u00adment with frame\u00adworks such as Maven, Jenkins and Cucum\u00adber are there\u00adfore possi\u00adble. The success of the project has again confirmed that software migration is an alter\u00adna\u00adtive to new develo\u00adp\u00adment and the use of standard software.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, we also feel the pressure in the area of digita\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion in our indus\u00adtry. In order to be able to conti\u00adnue to offer our innova\u00adtive soluti\u00adons on the market in the future, it was very important for us to moder\u00adnise our central leasing system. At the begin\u00adning, we were scepti\u00adcal about the tool-supported COBOL-Java migration, since we had heard about projects that had failed. However, we found the right partner in the pro et con team. As early as the proof of concept, it was possi\u00adble to prove that the complex arith\u00adme\u00adtic opera\u00adti\u00adons of finan\u00adcial mathe\u00adma\u00adtics were carried out correctly and that the runtime for mass proces\u00adsing programs also met our expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons. This very positive impres\u00adsion was confirmed as the project progressed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Our COBOL to Java Conver\u00adter (CoJaC) is a mature tool for this purpose. Such a project is always a joint project between equal partners. Especi\u00adally in the test phase, which is very important, S\u00fcdLea\u00adsing GmbH made a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the success of the project with its agile approach and the consis\u00adtent use of automa\u00adtic tests.
